The former national chairman of the National Federation of Young Farmers' Clubs is set to welcome the BBC on-farm for 24 hours in a bid to showcase the valuable work farmers do to keep the nation fed 24/7 during this year's #Farm24 event.
Returning for its sixth year and taking place from 5am August 5 - August 6, agriculture's biggest online event will see Milly Fyfe, food and farming ambassador, host BBC Northampton Breakfast show reporter Tom Percival, on-farm to document the realities of day-to-day farming life.
Running a mixed farming enterprise across more than 500 acres with her husband Andrew in Northamptonshire, alongside managing her marketing business, Millie said: "Welcoming Tom onto our family farm will hopefully help viewers to see the connection between what we do as farmers and food producers and the journey of how this high quality, sustainable produce reaches our plates."
In a bid to immerse BBC presenter into all-things farming life, she will guide Tom through a series of daily activities.
"We have a diverse enterprise here with 100 beef suckler cows, 300 sheep, pigs, and arable crops, and so we are keen to demonstrate how this farm to fork philosophy plays out in practice.
"The day will kick-off with Tom at 5am this Thursday right through to 5am Friday where he will join my husband in the combine harvester. We will also be cooking Tom a Sunday roast from scratch, all with produce from our farm.
"Alongside the vegetables we grow in our garden, we have recently had some pigs back from the butchers, crucially highlighting the low food miles and the tasty, nutritious food we are able to produce locally and at home."
Millie also reinforced the on-farm visit, in support of the #Farm24 campaign, will help shine a much-needed light on the ‘all-encompassing' nature of farming.
"From cow calving to volatile weather, and balancing a young family, farming is unlike any other 9-5 business. An incredible amount of hard work and effort goes into producing food with high standards."
