Blackburn Acer, 9,000gns breed record
THE record price for a Whitebred Shorthorn bull was broken not once but twice at Carlisle when bulls went under the hammer at 8,500gns and 9,000gns.
Setting the new record of 9,000gns was the overall champion, Blackburn Acer, a two-year-old son of Barlaes Trainer from G. Jackson, Newcastleton. Acer's dam is Blackburn Tara, a Ryburn River Orion Rocky son, and it sold in a two-way split to brothers, James and Robert McTurk from Dalry.
Hitting 8,500gns was the Spring View George William-sired Bloch Romeo from G. Bell and Son, Langholm. This rising three-year-old which sold to Messrs Pattinson and Son, Hexham, is out of Bloch Iona R, a Byers Hall Lord daughter.
Females sold to 4,000gns when Ormside Hall Estate, Appleby-in-Westmorland, paid that for the female champion, Glentyne Libby, from M.G. and J. Taylor, Corsock. Libby's pedigree features Glentyne Grafter on to the Glentyne George-sired Glentyne Libby.

Centre records for Galloway breed
RECORDS were broken at the sale of Galloways at Carlisle when centre record averages were set in both sections and the male champion went on to sell for a new centre record of 6,800gns.
Leading the way was Trueman of Haining House, a September 2024-born son of Gorka of Haining House from G. and C. Neve and Son, Brampton. Bred out of the Ben Lomond Tamdhu-sired Lady Nancy 787 of Whitehill, Trueman was knocked down to Messrs Vevers and Charnock, Lochanhead.
Next best at 5,400gns was Trooper of Haining House, another by the Gorka bull from Messrs Neve. Selling to Messrs McMorran, Twynholn, Trooper is out of the Karl of Haining House-sired Pearl of Haining House.
Messrs McTurk, Dalry, paid 5,000gns for three-year-old Kypehill Desperado, a Warhorse of Fingland son from W. and S. McCarthy, Kirkcudbright.
Pedigree females sold to 4,000gns twice. First up was the female champion, Barlaes Robina 60, a 28-month-old Buccleuch Buster daughter from Messrs McTurk. Bred from a Troloss Magnum-sired Robina, it sold to Messrs Rebanks, Penruddock.
The reserve female, Skelfhill Greta from I.H.G. Warden, Hawick, also made 4,000gns. Selling to Messrs Angus, Holmrook, Greta is by Quartz of Trolosse and out of Blackcraig Moss Rose B1100.
Messrs Wallace, Hexham, paid 3,400gns for Brownie 1027 of Whitehill, a Ben Lomond Tamdhu daughter PD'd in calf to Avicii of Kilnstown, from W.J. Henderson, Lockerbie.
Non-pedigree females sold to 2,200gns twice for bulling heifers from Messrs Forster, Carlisle, which both sold to Messrs Smith, Carlisle.
Leading the Belted Galloway entry at 2,400gns was the red and white heifer, Derwentdale Red Yasmin. This Perritys Gibbs daughter from Edwin Taylor and Co, Consett, sold to Messrs Hopkins, Brentnall.

Dairy cattle sell well at Exeter
BUYERS from many counties ensured a strong trade for dairy cattle at Exeter at the sale of 102 females which included a dispersal.
Selling for the top price of £3,150 was a 23-month-old heifer from Best Farms Partnership, Saltash, whose 11 cashed in to average £2,354, having also sold to £2,850.
The main consignment saw cows peak at £2,150 for a fifth-calving British Friesian from Rodney Pring and family, Awliscombe, while a run of in-calf heifers from David Bartlett, Wellington, reached £2,050.
The herd dispersal of NMR recorded Holstein Friesian cows on behalf of Mary Champneys, Tunbridge Wells, topped at 2,900gns for a Wisselview Wavelength-sired fresh fourth-calver, with another fourth-calver close behind at 2,800gns.
Autumn-calving cows sold to 2,500gns while dry cows reached 2,350gns as the dispersal averaged £1,981.

Top price of £3,500 for dairy females at Gisburn
DAIRY cattle peaked at £3,500 at the first weekly sale of March at Gisburn when an OCD Chronicle-sired heifer from G.B. Moorhouse went under the hammer at that price.
From Messrs Moorhouse's Skipton-based Aireburn herd, it is bred from a 50-tonne Evolution dam rated EX92(5) from the Roxy family.
Sticking with the pedigree heifers, Jennings Farmers, Ripon, welcomed a good trade with two at £3,000 – one was a Seagull-Bay Applejax daughter from the Tranthwaite Barbara family, and the other was by Westcoast Alvoce and out of Abbeyhouse Kathy.

A string of second-calvers from J.F. and R. Coar's Browlee herd, Forest of Bowland, led the pedigree cow section at £3,080 for a Metallica daughter from the Agatha line. Messrs Coar also received £3,020 for a Boghill Glamour Santos daughter.
Non-pedigree heifers peaked at £3,000 for a Koepon Oh Ryder Red-sired entry from G.M. Dakin and Sons, Bolton-by-Bowland, whileÌýG., E. and J. Donaldson, Great Busby, sold heifers in calf to Drouner Chase to £2,400.

Champions lead at Hexham
IT was the champion from the pre-sale show that sold for the top price of £5,200 at the March show and sale of suckled calves at Hexham, which incorporated the Young Farmers' Club (YFC) over-wintering competition.
Leading the way was a nine-month-old heifer from Eric and Mark Armstrong, Whitfield, which made £5,200.
Next best, at £3,200, was the third prize Limousin heifer from Miss Imogen Sparke, Hexham.
Similarly, it was the YFC champion that led its section when Kaitlyn Wigham's Limousin cross heifer – originally bred by Messrs Lee, Agars Hill – went on to sell for £3,700. This left the Haltwhistle YFC member with a gross margin of £1,530 – the largest of the competition.
Edward Younger, Coquetdale YFC, saw his reserve champion, a Limousin heifer, go under the hammer for £2,480, leaving a gross margin of £480.
Second best margin of the day at £840 was achieved by Sarah Willey, Whitley Chapel YFC, whose Limousin heifer sold for £2,600.
Best opposite sex to the champion was a Limousin cross steer from Charlotte Longlands, Bellingham YFC, which went on to sell for £3,020, while William Walker, Butsfield YFC, was best turned out with his Blue cross bullock that later realised £2,800.

Hexham and Northern Marts presented £350 to the club with the highest average profit margin, which this year went to Whitley Chapel YFC as four members averaged £467 profit per head.

Hollinscourt dispersal reaches 2,400gns
A DEANGATE Prince-sired second-calver made 2,400gns to top the on-farm dispersal of Patrick and Liz Davies' Hollinscourt herd of British Friesians near Chester.
It calved in late January and sold to a Carmarthenshire buyer, who paid a further 2,300gns for another Prince daughter that calved its second in early February.
Autumn-calvers reached 2,100gns twice and 2,000gns, while in-calf heifers peaked at 2,000gns and 1,950gns when a Scottish buyer paid that for Bradash Patriot Robin Red daughters.
Another heifer due in November also made 2,000gns, selling to a Staffordshire buyer.

Calvin leads Stabiliser sale
BULLS peaked at a record-breaking £12,100 at the Stabiliser Bull-It sale on behalf of the Stabiliser Cattle Company.
Making that price was Muiresk Black Calvin, a two-year-old by Givendale Black Wolds Best from the Mair family, Turriff. It is bred from the Snipe House UFO-sired Muiresk E14. It was one of several sold to Burden Bros Farms, Sheerness.
Next best at £9,600 was Rugley Black Canon from Lucy Jackson, Alnwick. Also selling to Burden Bros Farms, Canon's pedigree includes Redhill Double Agent on to LCoC Tidy Bee FK037, a Hooks Yakima daughter.

Huggate Campbell, a Knapton Wold Absalom son from Gary Shipley, York, realised £9,500, again to Burden Bros. It is out of a Snipe House USO daughter named Huggate Abbetina.
Messrs Dixon, Kendal, saw their Selside Black Cliff, a 9 Mile Franchise son, sell to J.P. and R. Ward, Barnard Castle, for £8,800.
Burden Bros paid a further £8,700 for Givendale Chancellor, a Givendale Yantai son from S.R. Farms, Pocklington.
