Mind Your Head Week: Tackling the winter blues

Isolation, business stresses and longer working hours are just a few driving factors to loneliness during the winter months. Farmers tend to be the last to ask for help, although they are also often those that need it the most. Ìý

The Farming Community Network (FCN) offers an all-year-round helpline alongside hosting local community events to encourage farmers to get off farm.ÌýÌý

Head of operations and communications at FCN, Alex Phillimore says there is a lot of uncertainty about the future which comes with a lot of stress, worry and anxiety, all which can contribute to mental health struggles.ÌýÌý

"But I think it is true that in many respects a problem shared is a problem halved," he said.Ìý

"I think we would encourage people where they can, to talk, whether that is to your vet, to a family member, to a friend, a neighbour or indeed a charity like FCN."Ìý

Get togethersÌýsuch asÌýFCN'sÌýFarmWellÌýevents bring farming and rural communities together and provide opportunities to exchange information and experience, catch up with friends, meet new people in the area, and enjoy some delicious local produce.Ìý

As many farmers live and work on the farm, spending time away can be challenging.ÌýÌý

Farming is a year-round job, and it is understandable that getting off farm is not always easy. However, there are things farmers can do to boost moral even from the comfort of their own homes.ÌýÌý

For those seeking connection, helplines are available all year round.ÌýÌý

You can call FCN on 03000 111 999, whether it is to talk about worries and stresses, farm life or even if you just need to hear a friendly voice at the end of the line. FCN also offers on-site visits where a local volunteer can come out to the farm.ÌýÌý

RABI the farmers charity, offers aÌýÌýservice. The platform provides confidential, text-based support, allowing you to connect with others without revealing your identity.ÌýÌý

There are also other on-farm activities that can help bring up the spirits. Why not try taking up a hobby? It can help you unwind and take focus away from stresses and pressures of life, giving something to look forward to each day. It can also beÌýa good wayÌýto become part of a community.Ìý

You can also try writing your troubles down. Your mind can become very clouded by the pressure of farming and life but writing it down can help you to process things on your mind and helpÌýmaintainÌýbalance between those important things.Ìý

And do not forget about sleep.ÌýAs farmers, timeÌýis often a resource that is not in abundance. Lack of sleep can affect the ability to process thoughts, emotions, actions etc., and therefore can have a significant impact on mental health.Ìý
