Sassy Lady

The event culminated in the prime cattle championship, won by the heifer champion, Sassy Lady, a black Limousin cross achieving a first overall win at LiveScot for Ayrshire-based couple Allan and Susan Campbell, Galston. The 17-month-old heifer by Trueman Idol out of a British Blue cross dam was bred by E.H. Pennie and Son and bought at Carlisle in March. At the sale following the show, Sassy Lady, weighing 674kg, topped the trade, selling for 拢9,500 to Jamie Scott Butchers, Paisley.

Judge, Keith Williamson, Co Tyrone, praised the overall quality on show. He said: "The champion and reserve were the two stand-out cattle, with the champion displaying a little bit more class. They were both the weight I was looking for, had been finished nicely, with great presence."

For reserve supreme, he selected the reserve heifer, Pink Lady, a British Blue cross from James Nisbet, Sorn. Weighing in at 666kg, it was bred by Martin McNeil and bought in Ireland, at a Carrick on Shannon sale, later winning champion at Kilmaurs Show in the summer. An 18-month-old, by the sire New Red and out of a Charolais cross dam, it reached 拢8,200 at the sale, selling to Drumbeg Farms, Drymen.

The commercial calf section was won by a January-born Limousin cross steer, The Crofter, from Andy Ireland, Darvel, who also won a new trophy, donated by the MacPherson family, for the best presented stockperson. His calf, by Cantona, had been bred by David Wright and bought at Thainstone and stood reserve male champion at Stars of the Future.

Reserve calf was Greenwells Hattie, a Limousin cross heifer from Brian Harper, Maddiston. This home-bred nine-month-old, by Graiggoch Rambo, had stood first in its class at AgriExpo.

Sheep

In the sheep ring, the winners of the butcher's section took the overall awards. Leading the way were two untrimmed Beltex cross lambs from Robert Garth and Sarah Priestley, Bentham, who were winning their first LiveScot championship. By a Kingledores tup and out of Beltex cross ewes, these ewe lambs weighed 51kg each. They later sold for the top lamb price of 拢500/head, to the judge, Chris Timm, Timm Family Butchers, Pickering.
He said: "It was a very high standard right through; the top end were close in every class and I'd happily sell them all in my shop. The overall champions just had that bit more length and conformation."

Mr Timm, was particularly impressed with the conformation of this pair and said: "They are the best Blackfaces I have ever handled."

Reserve hill pair were North Country Cheviot wether lambs from SRUC's House of Muir Farm, which had been brought out by Barony students. Weighing 45.5kg each, they made 拢200/head to W. Shearer, Strathaven.

Dairy

The dairy section was won by Ian Smith and Sons, Greentowers, Lanark, with the Holstein Willsbro Lambda Frosty, which had been bought as a maiden heifer at the Willsbro sale two years ago. Classified VG87 as a heifer, it is currently giving 65 litres, having calved eight weeks ago.
