Averages up on the year at Skipton's Mule gimmer lamb opener

The opening North of England Mule gimmer lamb show and sale at Skipton saw an overall average of £162.75 for 3,650 head, up £10.21 on the year

Trade topped at £320/head for the winning pen of 10 from Geoff and Margaret Walker and sons, John and Rob, Dunsop Bridge. The majority were by a home-bred Brennand Bluefaced Leicester tup, plus two by a Skelgate T2 and one by a West Biggins tup.

Stephen and Tracey Fawcett and daughter Samantha, Drebley, North Yorkshire, sold a pen of 10 at £300.

A further eight pens sold for £250 or more, including further pens at £280 and £250 from C.D. and R.F. Kitching, Threshfield, near Grassington, who had four pens at £200 or more in a run of more than 300 lambs.

The champion pen of 20 from Francis and James Caton, Weston, which sold for £240/head.

Francis and James Caton, Weston, sold two pens of 20 to a section top of £250/head twice, with their winning pen selling at £240. Their winning lambs were by home-bred tups T10 Weston and S5 Weston, as well as T5 West Biggins, a Welsh ram P2 Duhonw and R8 Otterburn Lodge.

The Catons also achieved the highest sale average among the large breeders at £186.23 for 201 lambs sold. A good number of 20s vendors achieved £200 plus for top pens, with plenty of others making £175 and above.
