There were champions from 45 pedigree sheep breeds in front of the judge, Willie Ingram, Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, for the inter-breed supreme

Great Yorkshire Show: Texel claims sheep inter-breed supreme

This was the MV-accredited and Texel champion, Uppermill Highway Express, a shearling ram by Clanfield Golden out of an Ettrick Earthquake daughter from Boden and Davies, Stockport. Having been bought for 10,000gns at the Solway and Tyne Texel Breeders Club sale at Carlisle as a lamb from breeders, the McKerrow family, Ellon, it was having its first show ring outing.

Reserve supreme

Reserve supreme overall and reserve MV-accredited was the Beltex champion, a home-bred shearling ewe by Matt's Joker from the Wilkinson family's Langlands flock, Richmond. The family also claimed the reserve female breed championship and reserve male championship with a ewe lamb and ram lamb from the same flush by Buckles Jericho.

Non-MV accredited championship

In the breed's centenary year, the non-MV accredited championship went to the Clun Forest champion, Inside Hype Hubert, a home-bred shearling ram by Honddu Gilbert from Paul and Lydia Murray, Penrith, which had been reserve inter-breed champion at Northumberland County Show.

Amy Donlon, Northallerton, took the reserve non-MV accredited title for the second year running. This time with her Teeswater champion, Highfields Goldie, a home-bred hogg in wool by a Burnbridge ram which had been supreme champion at North Yorkshire County Show.

Commercial championship

The commercial female championship went to Caesar Kermode who had made the trip from the Isle of Man with his home-bred Suffolk cross Charollais shearling ewe.

In reserve was the Masham champion, a shearling ewe from David Buck, Barnard Castle, which had been bought as a lamb at Bentham mart from breeder, David Verity.

National shows

At the breed's national show, the Zwartbles championship went to Aaron Breeze, Manfield, North Yorkshire, with a home-bred shearling ewe by Heyberries K Class from his Olbre flock.

It was also the Kerry Hill national show where the championship went to Will Awan, Bath, with his winning two-shear ram, Malbrook Jango, which was bought from breeder, John Croose, as a shearling.

Jade and Richard Bett, Louth, took the Berrichon championship with Yarburgh Adventurer, a son of last year's champion, Yarburgh Wright which had been champion at the national show at Royal Three Counties.

They also took the reserve breed title with a shearling ewe and reserve male and reserve female with twin lambs and the Badger Face Texel championship with Woodies Delight, a shearling ewe which had been bought from Stuart Wood as a lamb.

For the third year running Jet Alisa, a two-crop home-bred ewe from Ian Teasdale and family, York, claimed the Rouge championship.

Josh and Zoe Eddleston, Ribchester, were competing at the show for the first time and took the Border Leicester championship with a two-shear ram from their Ribbleway  flock which had been bought from the Slatehill flock, Northern Ireland, at Lanark as a lamb.

The Charollais championship went to the Marwood family, York, with a home-bred shearling ewe Lowerye Vulcan from their Foulrice flock.

Bethany Chew and Ben Whitham, Bingley, took the Dutch Spotted championship with Milltown Hulk, a shearling ram by Milltown Golden Balls from their Lode Pit flock.

The Whitefaced Woodland championship went to John William Thorp, Rishworth, with the winning aged ram from the family's High Moss flock.
