Kirkby Classic sale of show potential cattle tops at £6,000 for the champion

An entry of 496 cattle went under the hammer at the Farmers Guardian-supported Kirkby Classic show and sale of show potential cattle at Kirkby Stephen

The show was judged by Phil Sellers, Lincolnshire, who awarded the championship to Ivy 51AVÊÓÆµVimto, a February 2024-born pedigree Limousin heifer by Huntershall Rosco out of Ivy House Royalty, a Shire Apollo daughter. Consigned by Beth and Luke Wilkinson, Leyburn, it went on to sell for the top price of £6,000 to B.T. Kitson, Hutton Rudby.

Taking the reserve championship was the first prize winning haltered Limousin steer from W.A. and G.R. Sedgley, Barbon. May 2024-born and by Gallaber Paddy, it sold for £3,500 to Michael Wynne, Derbyshire.

The winner of the new baby beef class was a five-month-old Limousin heifer consigned by Messrs Pickles, Chapel le Dale, which went on to sell for £5,200, again to Messrs Kitson.

Making £3,800 was the winner of the younger Limousin-sired heifer class, an eight-month-old daughter of Cloughead Napoleon from K.A. Brown and Sons, Great Asby, which sold to Messrs Barnet, Shap. Messrs Brown also sold a 10-month-old Limousin heifer at £3,200.

Messrs Sedgely had the winning haltered British Blue heifer, a 10-month-old entry which sold for £3,700 to Messrs Wynne and also sold nine-month-old Limousin heifers at £2,600.

The winning British Blue steer, a 10-month-old son of Tanant Lotto from John Smith Jackson, Haydon Bridge, was knocked down at £3,400 to Messrs Dickinson, Ashbourne.

Messrs Barnett also paid £3,700 for a 12-month-old Limousin heifer from K. and G.J. Huck, Austwick, and £3,100 for a 10-month-old Limousin heifer from Messrs Winn, Burneside.

Trade was strong throughout the sale with heifers averaging £1,938.41 overall, up £610.59 on the year. Steers averaged £1,846.04 up £436.32 on the year with an overall sale average of £1,882.49 up £513.63, for predominantly eight-10-month-old cattle. The 61 show calves averaged £2,708.78 up £490.60 on the year.
