Sales round up: Dot tops dogs at £16,300, online sheep sales to £8,100 twice, dairy sales reach £4,200

Dot delivers in online Dolgellau dog sale

A YOUNG bitch headed up the online sale of sheepdogs when Dot from Dewi Jenkins, Ceredigion, sold for £16,300, as 11 dogs sold for more than £5,000 with two breaking the £10,000 barrier.

Selling to a buyer from Mid Wales, 14-month-old Dot is a High Hills Jo daughter and was suitable for work and trial.

Mynach Jet, £12,600

Next best at £12,600 when sold to a new home in Belgium was Mynach Jet from Poddy McKillop, Northern Ireland. This 18-month-old daughter of Clywd Bob also has a future in the trial and work fields.

Just shy of the five-figure bracket at £9,600 was Flash from Ross Games, Brecon. Selling to a buyer from Somerset, it is by Ross' own Jim.

Making £8,600 was Cefneithin Mist from Sion Jones, North Wales, followed at £6,900 for Jim from Alun Edwards, Tonyrefail, while Glen Mitchell's Fly from Wigtownshire realised £6,800.

Selling to a buyer in Argyll for £6,100 was the dearest of the partly-trained dogs, Mainstay Flash from Andrew Green, Carmarthen.

Huntaways peaked at £4,200 for Frank from Derek Cheetham, Sheffield. This son of Ellis Rees' Tone sold to a Derbyshire home.

Pups sold to £2,750 for Peg from Ruscombe Jones, Raglan. This four-month-old daughter of Ross Games' Sam sold to the USA.

Also heading to the USA was Ross Games' Floss at £2,150 while Neville Redman, Torfaen, sold Sue to a Dumfries buyer for £2,000.

Averages – Trained dogs, £5,357; partly-trained dogs, £2,205; pups, £1,037.

Borderway dairy day reached £4,200

A COW from the Davidson family's Errolston herd,Ìý Gretna, topped the July dairy day at Borderway when it went under the hammer at £4,200.

Selling two weeks into its third lactation and giving 45kg, Errolston Hail Sylvia VG85 recorded more than 12,000kg in its second and is out of an EX92-classified dam. It caught the eye of Messrs Jackson, Dumfries.

Messrs Blezard, Preston, bought several of the highest priced lots including the second top, a heifer named Ashberry Rager Lynne 3 from Alan McCamley, Ochiltree. It calved down at the end of May and changed hands yielding 37kg.

The Ayrshire section peaked at £3,000 for Halmyre Urr Ladybird 588 from the ongoing dispersal from Messrs Davidson, Castle Douglas. This heifer sold a month fresh to Tack Farms, Bromyard.

In-calf heifers sold to £2,950 for a Cherryhill Actionman daughter from Edward and Linda Wilson, Southwaite, which was purchased by Messrs Naylor, Cumbria.

James Rutherford, Darvel, sold a run of 33 in-calf heifers to a top of £2850 twice.

Grazing-type cattle met keen demand, topping at £2,150 for a fresh two-year-old Holstein-cross-Jersey from Robert Hunter, Lanarkshire. It was purchased by Messrs Crichton, Dumfriesshire.

Holstein maiden heifers sold to £1,400 for a pair of August-born heifers from Messrs Byers, Brampton.

A small group of heifer calves from Messrs Vevers, Dumfries, concluded the sale, selling to £1,100 for two September-born Montbeliarde-cross calves.

Opening sale of store lambs at Gisburn

STORE lambs averaged £127 across all breeds, a rise of £22 on the last year, at the opening sale of 800 at Gisburn.

Leading the trade at £176 was a pen of Beltex-sired lambs from A.J. Brown, Litton, followed at £172 for a similar sort from J. Mellin, Long Preston, who sold another pen at £162.

C. and J. Harrison, Winterburn, sold further Beltex at £165 while P.R. Sedgwick, Silsden, and R.J. and G. Umpleby, Killinhall, sold batches at £160.

Virtually all first-cross type lambs were in the £130-£150 bracket while Cheviots were up to £126 and Mules to £115.

Online sales peak at £8,100 twice

A NUMBER of online sales held over the weekend saw Suffolks in the Big Bang sale top at £8,100 apiece.

Castleisle, £8,100

First to make that was a Castleisle shearling gimmer from A. Wilson, Co Donegal, which was snapped up by Messrs Doyle, Co Wicklow. Part of the winning inter-breed pairs at Finn Valley Show, it is by Malinhead Cannonball and out of a home-bred ewe.

Ballynacannon, £8,100

Matching that £8,100 when sold to Messrs Delves and Co, Powys, was a Ballynacannon gimmer by Cairness Eye Catcher out of an Oakbridge ewe, from D. Taylor, Co Londonderry.Ìý

Two followed on at £3,500, this first of which was a Forkins ram lamb by Ballynacannon Coldplay from Alastair Gault, Co Antrim, which sold to Messrs Blair, Thornton-Cleveleys.

Matching that when sold to Messrs Dickson, Co Down, was a Ballynacannon ewe lamb by the 42,000gns Islandmoyle Spartacus from Messrs Wilson.

Manor House, £5,200

Heading up the Charollais Supreme offering at £5,200 when sold to J.T. Farming, Cumbria, was a Manor House ewe lamb from Manor House Livestock, Nottinghamshire. The December-born entry is by Manor House Destino and out of a Logie Durno ewe.

G. Foster, Co Tyrone, received £5,000 from Messrs Ramsey, Kelso, for a Springhill ram lamb by a Logie Durno sire and out of a Springhill ewe.

Coose Jukebox, £4,550

Messrs Jackson, Co Down, bought the two top-priced lots at the dispersal of R. Tuohy's Coose Dutch Spotted flock from Co Galway. Dearest at £4,550 was Coose Jukebox, a ram lamb by Milltown I-Fired and out of Coose Goldstar.

Selling to Messrs Jackson for £2,450 was Coose Jellybean, a ewe lamb also by the Milltown ram but out of Broadwater Gina.

Kilduff, £4,000

Suffolk ewe lambs from J. Dunne, Co Cavan, led the Breeders Choice Summer Selection sale when they sold for £4,000 and £2,900 to Messrs Delves, Powys, and Messrs Campbell, Newton Stewart, respectively. The embryo sisters are sired by Cherrylea Dark Destroyer and out of a Kilduff ewe.

Other breeds reached £1,650 for a Blue Texel ram lamb named Powerful Krankshaft from P. Crowe, Co Cavan. Selling to Messrs Burke, Co Roscommon, it is by Hurricane Harley Davidson.

Prime lambs sell well at Cockermouth

PRIME lambs sold above the £10/kg mark at a show and sale at Cockermouth, where the champion entry, a Millenium Bleu from from James Crichton, Egremont, topped at £10.22/kg or £450/head, selling to the judge, Ben Cowton, Tow Law.

The reserve, a Texel from E. Cranston, Egremont, sold for 735.8p/kg or £390 to J. Walker, Cockermouth.

Leading the consignor averages at £239.67 for six was K. Hodgson, Cockermouth, followed at £239 for six from Messrs Walker.

Cast ewes peaked at £360 for a Texel from R. and E. Campbell, Cockermouth, with Beltex to £315 from Messrs Crichton.

Large entry of lambs at Skipton

SPRING lambs traded to average £178.41/head or 398.8p/kg for the largest turnout this season of 2,569 at Skipton.

They topped at £260 on four occasions for pens of Texels from R.C. Reed and Son, York, as well as 561p/kg for a trio of 41kg Beltex from H.J. and M. Hey, Mytholmroyd.

The pre-sale show was won by five Beltex weighing 42kg from Ellis Bros, Addingham, which went on to make £232/head.

The reserve pen, 46kg Suffolk crosses from P. Crabtree and Son, Clifton, realised £200/head.

The opening July dairy sale was led by the champion, a heifer by Winstar Edition from Mark Smith, Winterburn. Calved five weeks prior and yielding 40kg with a PLI of £364, it sold for £2,900.

The reserve, a week-calved non-pedigree heifer from Margaret Goldie, Danby Wiske, realised £2,550.

Pedigree heifers to £3,820 at Gisburn

DAIRY cattle peaked at £3,820 at Gisburn for Broholme Nashville Susie 2, from R.M. Shackleton, Broughton.

Bred from one of the herd's deepest cow families, with its direct dam recording 11,753kg in its third lactation, this heifer changed hands yielding 32kg.

Selling for £3,650 was Abbeyhouse Rubi Taz Juliet, a red rosette winner from Jennings Farmers, Ripon.

Pedigree cows reached £3,580 for a third-calver yielding 46kg, from W.J. and I. France, Chipping, who also sold a 42kg second-calver bred from an EX91 dam for £3,120.

Messrs Shackleton received a further £3,200 for a Denmire Medcarp-sired heifer from the herd's Dawn family.

The first-prize non-pedigree heifer from J. and B. Rowland, Haighton, realised £3,100, while pedigree in-calf heifers hit £2,780 for Newcroft Doral Epic Red 2 from D.W. and M.N. Ishmael, Orrell.

Averages – Pedigree heifers, £2,757; pedigree cows, £2,716; non-pedigree heifers, £2,397; non-pedigree cows, £2,310; pedigree in-calf heifers, £2,780; non-pedigree in-calf heifers, £2,476.
