Hereford reigns supreme in beef rings at Royal Norfolk Show

There was an impressive turnout of livestock over the two days of sunshine at the Royal Norfolk Show

It was bulls which led the way in the beef supreme taking champion and reserve. The top spot went to the native male champion, Coley 1 Centurian, a December 2024-born Hereford bull from Heather Whittaker, Halifax, shown by Andrew Hughes. By Gouldingpoll 1 Gold Spice out of Gouldingpoll 1 Duchess 916, the home-bred bull was recently male breed champion at the Royal Highland Show and was also native inter-breed champion at Shropshire County.

Taking reserve supreme was the continental male champion, Denzies Nugget, a four-year-old Simmental bull by Denzies Hamish from the Wood family, Preston. Bought as a stock bull at Stirling in 2024, its first crop of calves saw heifers sell to 15,000gns at the herd's production sale.Ìý

It was also the Simmental National Show where the Wood family took the championship with the six-year-old home-bred cow, Popes Princess Lumi by Team Celtic 11 out of the former Royal Welsh and Great Yorkshire Show inter-breed champion, Popes Princess Cleo, with Denzies Nugget taking the reserve champion rosette.

The continental female championship went to John and Jenny Rix, Colchester, with Wissington Valley, a two-year-old Charolais heifer by Elgin Oliver.ÌýÌý

Claiming the native female champion were Robert Mawer and Emma Benge, Woodall Spa, with Weeton Felicia W126, a six-year-old Aberdeen-Angus cow by Neil's Black Bardolior.

The show also hosted the Beef Shorthorn national show where the championship went to William Clarke Livestock, Norwich, with the January 2025-born home-bred heifer, Williams Rosebud's Wisteria, with reserve going to Millie Birch, Stafford, with Highsky Empresses Angel, which had been second in the class to the champion.

The Belted Galloway Cattle Society also had its national show with the championship going to Blackhorn Bonnie, a two-year-old in-calf heifer from Ben and Becky Burgess-Smith, Lincoln, and reserve to Jonathan and Vicky Clowes, Ilkeston, with Monochrome Layla, a two-year-old heifer.Ìý

The commerical championship went to the Lyon family, Bourne, with Suzie, a 15-month-old British Blue heifer which had been champion at Beef Expo.

Dairy

A small entry of dairy cattle was headed by the Jersey champion, Barnowl Joel Vickie, a third calver by Barnowl Billy Joel out of Barnowl Engineer Vickie from Barnowl Jerseys, Brackley. Having calved in March it is currently giving 29kg daily at 4.27% butterfat and 3.05% protein.

The reserve championship went to the Ayrshire champion, Holmeswood Ring Bella, a two-year-old in-calf heifer by Blue Spruce Ringer out of Holmeswood Drunken Bella from Harry's Ayrshires, Great Moulton.

Sheep

In the sheep rings, inter-breed judge, William Carson, Co Antrim, chose as champion, the any other down breed champion, a Poll Dorset ewe lamb from Harry Lugsden's Nippy's flock, Eye.Ìý

In reserve was Olivia Conner, Thorpe Thewles, Co Durham, with a home-bred Teeswater shearling ewe in full wool which had been a winner at the Great Yorkshire Show last year as a ewe lamb. Ms Conner had a good day also winning the ewe lamb and tup lamb classes and the inter-breed wool on the hoof title.

Mr Carson said his champion was a great representative for the breed with great presence which handled well and the reserve was a tremendous shearling ewe with a great fleece.

Pigs

Lewin Lady 6, a July 2025-born British Saddleback gilt from Emily Paddock, Cheadle,Ìý continued its winning run when claiming the pig inter-breed title.

By Prestcombe Golden Arrow 43 out of Lewin 5, it has already been inter-breed champion at South of England and Royal Cheshire shows this season.
