Jock sets new Highland cattle record at Oban

A second-prize bull set a new UK breed record at the Highland Cattle Society’s spring show and sale at Oban when Iain MacKay and Claire Simonetta’s Jock of Cnoc Na Sith went under the hammer at 34,000gns

The rising three-year-old bull from the Isle of Mull-based fold is backed by home genetics being by Alastair of Cnoc Na Sith and out of Monica 3 of Cnoc Na Sith, which is in turn by Egan of Cnoc Na Sith. Bred for longevity and temperament, Jock achieved a fold best for the duo when knocked down to Blasta Mhor Highland Cattle, a genetics company owned by Dalmally's Angus MacGillivray and Australia's Paul Reese.

Hitting 11,000gns when snapped up by Duncan Buchanan, Benderloch, was Fingal 5 of Culfoich which also set a fold best for Gordon McConachie and family, Grantown.ÌýÌýThis junior male champion at last year's Royal Highland is by Bryden 2 of Culfoich and out of the Donnachadh Ruadh 1 of West Merkland daughter, Laria 1 of Culfoich.

Four bulls made 10,000gns apiece, first of which was Ruaridh of Airyolland, a Ruaridh 2 of Glengorm son from Neale and Janet McQuistin, New Luce, which sold to T. Nelson, Tobermory.

Next at 10,000gns when sold to Kevin Rice, Maidstone, was Fear A Ghlinne of Black Glen from Grant Hyslop, Biggar. It is by Seamus of Craigowmill.

Balrownie Farms, Brechin, paid 10,000gns for the Ruaridh of Craigowmill-sired Coinneach of Ardbhan from the MacDonald family, North Uist.

Also at 10,000gns was Prionnsa Ruadh of Cross Reguill, a Black Prince of Ranch son from J., S. and R. Harris, Strathaven. It sold to R. and S. Strachan, Isle of Mull.

Heifers peaked at 8,000gns for the reserve female champion, three-year-old Kirsty 9 of Gartocharn from Jim and Catherine McKechnie, Dumbartonshire. The successful show heifer that stood champion at Drymne is by Brodie of Culfoich and out of Kirsty Morag of Ubaidh, by Torquil 1 of West Merkland. Kirsty sold to the team at Coul Estate, Newtonmore.

Next best at 6,500gns when knocked down to Huraco Rarebreeds, Sheffield, was the Cameron of Sguir Mor-sired Cally of Luruha from Lurg and Townhead Farms, Fintry..

Coul Estate paid a further 5,500gns for two-year-old Boidheach Ruadh 11 of Broomrigg, an Asainte of Strathellie daughter from D.R. Fountain, Lochmaben.

AveragesÌý– Bulls – 12 two-year-old, £5,162.50; 8 three-year-olds, £3,924.38; 1 aged, £3,150; 4 yearlings, £3,018.75. Heifers – 3 three-year-olds, £4,829.93; 5 two-year-olds, £3,613; 21 yearlings, £2,675.
