Farmers protest at Lidl distribution centres

Farmer protesters have blocked a Lidl distribution centre in Peterborough on January 22, with vehicles being preventing from entering and leaving.

Nine tractors and trailers were in attendance in Peterborough, with around a dozen in Doncaster.

Mark Watler, a farm worker from Leicestershire, said the farmers just wanted to be listened to.

He highlighted the latest inflation figures, with the increase in food and drink being driven by products including bread, but this being disconnected from the price of grain.

"This has gone beyond inheritance tax," he said.

"My message is listen to us and meet us at the table.

"We understand, we are all businesses. We have all got to make money, within reason.

"But there is too much profiteering going on.

"If we were paid fairly for what we produce, most farmers would pay Inheritance Tax but to pay you are going to be working for free for 10 years."

He added the people on the ground at Lidl and the lorry drivers had generally been supportive, with protesters being reasonable and letting some empty lorries through.

"Farming is like no other industry. I always said if farmers went on Dragons Den and said we do this and this is how much we do it for.

"They would be laughed out of the room."
