South Devon bulls top at 9,000gns at Exeter for reserve champion

A strong trade for South Devon bulls at the spring show and sale at Exeter resulted in an average of £5,665, an increase of £534 on last year

Top price at 9,000gns was the reserve champion bull from Colcharton 51AVÊÓÆµPartners, Tavistock. This was Colcharton Clyde 9, a son of Trewint Clyde, which sold to M.R. and R.J. Rowe, Liskeard, for their Tregondale herd.

Next at 8,000gns was Boakley Emperor, a previous winner of the yearling bull class at the National Show and the winner of class two of the pre-sale show from R. Saunders, Malmesbury. The buyer was C. E. Caunter and Son, Ipplepen, Devon.

Three bulls followed with price tags of 7,500gns. The first being Providence Major from S., L. and J. Tucker, Salcombe. The Sexton Majestic son was snapped up by S. J. and S. M. Ward, Truro.

At the same money was Colcharton Clyde 11, by the same sire as the top price bull from Colcharton 51AVÊÓÆµPartners, which was the pick of G. Able and Sons, Tavistock.

ÌýThe final bull at 7,500gns, bought by A.C. Luscombe and Sons, East Allington, Devon, was Godworthy King 2, a son of Mutterton Kingston Black, from R. C. Burrough and Sons, Axminster.

Champion of the day was Trewint Capri from Peter and Ashley Rowe, Liskeard, which had the same sire as last year's champion, Trewint Carlos, the first placed bull in the 2023 National herd competition. It sold for 7,000gns to D. J. Thomas and Son, Launceston, for their Treguddick herd.

A pair of bulls then sold at 6,000gns. The first being another Trewint Carlos, Trewint Cornelius from Peter and Ashley Rowe which was the pick of C. G. Bonner and Son, Thornton, Buckinghamshire. The other was Waddeton Illustrious 8 from The Tully Partnership, Brixham, which found a new home with R. J. Rew and Son, Newton Abbot.

Only two cows forward in the female section topped at 3,500gns for the 2017-born cow, Woodhayes Daffodil 65 from B. G. and J. Z. A. Dart, Cullompton. By Hawkley SAS Javelin and in-calf to Rufford SAS Dillon, it sold to R. J. Rew, Newton Abbot.
