If there is one horsepower bracket that continues to define the UK tractor market, it is the 120-180hp segment. Whether on livestock, mixed or arable farms, these machines are increasingly expected to be genuine all-rounders.

That versatility has driven rapid development in recent years. Four-cylinder tractors now produce power levels that would once have been reserved for much larger six-cylinder machines, while improved transmissions, higher hydraulic outputs and increasingly sophisticated precision farming systems give buyers more choice than ever before.

Zetor – Series 6

The launch of the new Series 6 marks one of the biggest steps forward in Zetor's recent history, unveiled to UK farmers at Cereals 2026.

Power comes from a 4.1-litre, four-cylinder Deutz Stage V engine, with four models producing from 131hp to 171hp. Drive is through an all-new ZF powershift transmission offering up to 54 forward and 27 reverse ratios with creep gears, while an electrohydraulic Powershuttle and automatic powershift functions are designed to improve both field performance and loader work. A 120 litres/minute load-sensing hydraulic system and rear linkage capable of lifting up to 9,700kg provide ample performance. The redesigned cab also introduces a suspended cab, touchscreen display and suspended front axle, bringing operator comfort and connectivity up to the standards expected in this segment.

Massey Ferguson – 6S

The 6S has established itself as Massey Ferguson's flagship four-cylinder tractor, offering the performance of a larger machine without sacrificing compact dimensions. Covering 135-180hp, it has become a popular choice for livestock, mixed and contracting businesses where versatility is a priority.

Power comes from AGCO Power's 4.9-litre four-cylinder engine, paired with either the Dyna-6 semi-powershift or Dyna-VT continuously variable transmission. Hydraulic outputs of up to 190 litres/minute and a rear lift capacity of 9,600kg provide ample capability for modern implements, while Datatronic 5, Auto-Guide and Isobus deliver the technology expected of a premium tractor.

For buyers wanting the agility of a four-cylinder machine without compromising on specification or operator comfort, the 6S remains one of the strongest contenders in this horsepower class.

New Holland – T6

New Holland's T6 offers a wide range of buyer configuration. Sitting at the heart of the manufacturer's line-up, it has the capacity to meet a wide range of user requirements.

Power comes from both FPT 4.5-litre and 6.7-litre NEF engines, with rated outputs covering 116-150hp. Buyers can choose between Electro Command, Dynamic Command and the Auto Command continuously variable transmission, allowing the tractor to be matched to individual workloads. Hydraulic flow rates of up to 170 litres/minute and a rear lift capacity of 7,864kg provide strong performance.

One of the T6's strengths is probably its flexibility. Buyers can specify anything from a straightforward livestock tractor through to a high-specification machine equipped for precision farming and intensive field work, while those requiring additional power can step into the new T7 Standard Wheelbase range with rated power outputs starting at 179hp.

Case IH – Maxxum

Sitting between the smaller Vestrum and larger Puma ranges, the Maxxum covers this power bracket quite comprehensively. Following on from the Vestrum's 140hp maximum power output, the Maxxum derives power from FPT four- and six-cylinder engines, covering 155-175hp maximum power outputs.

Buyers can choose between the ActiveDrive 4 semi-powershift or CVXDrive continuously variable transmission, with hydraulic outputs of up to 150 litres/minute and a rear lift capacity of 7,864kg. AccuGuide auto-steer, Isobus compatibility and the latest connectivity features ensure the Maxxum is equally capable of supporting precision farming operations.

Claas – Arion 500 & 600

Claas has had a considerable push with new tractor launches in recent years, but for now the Arion 500 and 600 Series cover the heart of Claas' mid-range tractor offering, giving buyers the choice of four- and six-cylinder models without stepping into the larger Axion range.

Depending on the model, power comes from either a 4.5-litre or 6.8-litre DPS engine, with outputs extending beyond the upper end of this horsepower bracket. Buyers can specify either the Hexashift powershift or Cmatic continuously variable transmission, while hydraulic outputs of up to 150 litres/minute and rear lift capacities ranging from 7,500-8,000kg provide ample capability. The latest Cebis terminal, Isobus compatibility and Claas guidance systems complete a competitive technology package.

Valtra – N Series

The Valtra N Series offers compact versatility in the 120-180hp segment, combining the agility of a four-cylinder machine with the capability expected of a larger tractor. Positioned between the smaller G Series and six-cylinder T Series, it has become a popular choice for mixed farms, livestock businesses and contractors requiring a machine equally at home in the yard or the field.

Power comes from AGCO Power's 4.9-litre four-cylinder engine, with models in this bracket producing between 135hp and 165hp, with additional boost on tap. Buyers can choose from HiTech, Active, Versu and Direct models, ranging from a straightforward five-step powershift to the Direct continuously variable transmission. Hydraulic outputs of up to 200 litres/minute and a rear lift capacity of 7,800kg provide strong performance.

The N Series' biggest strength is flexibility. Combined with Valtra Unlimited, buyers can tailor almost every aspect of the tractor, making it one of the easiest machines in this class to specify for individual requirements.

Fendt – 500 Vario Gen4 & 600 Vario

Fendt has strengthened its position in the 120-180hp sector with the introduction of two new tractor platforms. The 500 Vario Gen4 covers 134-164hp, while the 600 Vario extends from 149-209hp, giving buyers a clear choice between a compact all-round tractor and a slightly larger machine designed for more demanding applications.

Both machines are powered by AGCO Power's CORE 5.0-litre four-cylinder engine, combining compact dimensions with the FendtONE operating platform and the familiar Vario continuously variable transmission. Hydraulic outputs of up to 152 litres/minute make them equally suited to loader work, mowing, baling and general field operations.

Stepping into the 600 Vario brings greater weight, increased hydraulic performance of up to 205 litres/minute and the TA150 transmission, while retaining a four-cylinder engine. With integrated guidance, Isobus compatibility and advanced automation available throughout the range, both tractors aim to reinforce Fendt's reputation for combining premium technology with operator comfort.

Deutz-Fahr – Series 6.4

The Series 6.4 remains Deutz-Fahr's principal contender in the 120-180hp sector, offering a wide choice of specifications for buyers wanting a well-equipped tractor.

Power comes from Deutz's 4.1-litre four-cylinder engine, producing between 129hp and 171hp, with selected models offering additional boost for transport and PTO applications. Transmission options include the powershift, RCshift or the TTV continuously variable transmission. Hydraulic outputs of up to 160 litres/minute and rear lift capacities of up to 9,700kg.

Kubota – M7004

Kubota's M7004 has established itself as a credible alternative in the mainline tractor market. As the manufacturer's flagship agricultural range, it targets mixed farms, livestock businesses and contractors looking for a dependable, uncomplicated tractor with generous standard specification.

Power comes from Kubota's own 6.1-litre four-cylinder engine, with models covering 130-170hp. Buyers can choose between the K-Power powershift transmission or the KVT continuously variable transmission, depending on operating preference. Hydraulic outputs of up to 110 litres/minute and a rear lift capacity of 9,400kg provide ample performance for a wide range of field and grassland equipment, while the optional K-Monitor, Isobus compatibility and guidance systems allow the M7004 to be equipped for modern precision farming.

JCB – Fastrac Series 4000

Perhaps a lesser-seen model in the 4000 Series line-up, the 4160 offers a rated output of 167hp, boosting to 178hp, making it worthy of a mention.

Rather than competing directly with conventional tractors, it has carved out a niche among contractors, large mixed farms and businesses where road transport forms a significant part of the working day. Full suspension, equal-sized wheels and high-speed capability give the machine functionality beyond most others in this line-up.

Power comes from AGCO Power's 6.6-litre six-cylinder engine. Drive is provided through the AGCO ML180 continuously variable transmission, while hydraulic outputs of up to 195 litres/minute and a 7,000kg rear linkage provide ample capability. The latest iCON operating system claims to offer improved machine customisation.

While four-wheel steering could prove a welcome addition to some farm applications.

McCormick – X6.4 and X7 SWB

McCormick covers the 120-180hp sector with two distinct ranges. The X6.4 is the more compact option, while the short-wheelbase X7 provides greater power, weight and hydraulic capacity for buyers tackling heavier field work.

The X6.4 range comprises three four-cylinder models producing maximum outputs of 135-155hp. Power comes from a 4.5-litre FPT engine, paired with McCormick's P6-Drive transmission, which combines six powershift steps with four robotised ranges. A 114 litres/minute load-sensing hydraulic system and a rear lift capacity of 7.2 tonnes give it enough performance for loader work, grassland machinery and general mixed-farm duties.

Above it, the X7 SWB range includes four- and six-cylinder models producing 165hp and 176hp. Buyers can choose between P6-Drive and the stepless VT-Drive transmission, while the shorter wheelbase maintains manoeuvrability without sacrificing the capability expected from a heavier tractor with a 9,300kg lift capacity.

John Deere – 6M

Occupying the gap between the practical 5M and premium 6R, the John Deere 6M has become one of the benchmark tractors in the 120-180hp sector. A broad model line-up means there is a specification to suit almost every application.

Recent updates have brought the range into line with its larger stablemates, introducing a redesigned cab, improved controls and the option of the e19 full powershift transmission for 2027. Buyers can also opt for the AutoPowr continuously variable transmission or PowrQuad and AutoQuad transmissions. Power comes from John Deere's familiar 4.5-litre four-cylinder and 6.8-litre six-cylinder engines. Hydraulic outputs of up to 195 litres/minute and a rear lift capacity from 5,650-7,650kg provide capability across this power bracket.

Strong residual values and an extensive dealer network continue to offer brand appeal in the UK market.
