Michelin pushing the boundaries of tyre manufacturing

Michelin is a name known to many as a go-to brand for premium agricultural tyres, but its business also extends to the development of specific tyres for individual products. This was the case for CNH when it began planning its largest ever CR11 combine. James Huyton reports.

The Cerexbib2 VF remains Michelin’s flagship harvester tyre, but the two new range-topping sizes are unlikely to make it UK shores, due to UK road width restrictions.

Fundamental goals of reducing soil compaction and reducing energy consumption remain at the core of Michelin's principles as they continue to push the boundaries of tyre manufacture.ÌýÌý

The continuedÌýconsolidation of theÌýagriculturalÌýsector around the world pushes manufacturers toÌýever greater size and scale of machinery.ÌýÌý

As we see advancements in digital innovation, we still requireÌýtangible materialÌýdevelopmentÌýto createÌýtheÌýlatest product developments, not least theÌýlatestÌýarchitectureÌýin CNH'sÌýrange-toppingÌýcombines.ÌýÌýNew HollandsÌýCR10ÌýandÌýCR11ÌýformedÌýwhat theÌýmanufacturerÌýis calling,ÌýaÌýnext-generationÌýofÌýcombines.ÌýÌý

Michelin's Valladolid production site in Spain makes large tyres for high-powered vehicles such as combine harvesters and self-propelled spreaders.

TheseÌýground-upÌýmachinesÌýfirst saw conception back in 2014. GeertÌýNerinckx,ÌýglobalÌýÌýproductÌýmanagerÌýforÌýCNHÌýcombinesÌýsaid: "We wanted to make a machine that was asÌýmanoeuvrableÌýas theÌýcurrent market options and reduce ground pressureÌýwith a higher capacity machine than previous models."Ìý

"Yes, the combine isÌýlongerÌýbut it turns in a smallerÌýcircumferenceÌýthan the currentÌýCR10.90 thanks to a specially designed rearÌýaxle.ÌýÌý

Although aÌýfully wheeled versionÌýof the machine is notÌýavailable in the UKÌýdue toÌýitsÌýoverallÌýwidthsÌýof 3.99mÌýandÌý3.79m,Ìýthe track derivativeÌýwasÌýalsoÌýdeveloped in conjunction with Michelin's sister companyÌýCamso,ÌýwhichÌýthe French tyre giantÌýacquiredÌýback in 2018.ÌýÌýÌý

Michelin forms an exclusive deal with CNH to produce for the CR10 and CR11 says Mr Nerinckx.

MrÌýNerinckxÌýsaid: "Even whenÌýoperatingÌýwithÌýaÌý15.2m (50ft)Ìýheader, the CR11Ìýoffers a ground pressure reduction of 7% compared to theÌýCR10.90ÌýÌý

Michelin'sÌýCerexbibÌý2 alreadyÌýserves the UK harvester market providing a VFÌýlow-groundÌýpressureÌývariant forÌýhigh-loadÌýmachines.ÌýÌý

Launched in 2011,ÌýtheÌýCerexbibÌýwas the first VF harvester tyre on the market,ÌýwithÌýtheÌýlatestÌýversionÌýaddingÌýtwo further sizes to the range.ÌýÌý

In conjunction with the CR10 and CrR11,ÌýMichelin launched two new sizes within that rangeÌýwithÌýtheÌýVF800/70/R46 CFO and VF900/65R46 CFO.Ìý

These two new sizesÌýrepresentÌýanÌýexclusiveÌýdealÌýfor Michelin,ÌýtoÌýonly supplyÌýCNH productsÌýwith these combineÌýtyreÌýsizes for the next two years.Ìý

To fit the larger tyres, CNH had to develop the combine front axle and frame around the tyre dimensions.
A longer frame, and purpose built pivoting rear axle, the C11 operates a smaller turing circle than the former CR10.90.

But with theÌýCR10 and CR11Ìýthe only two machines in theÌýmarketplaceÌýcapable of taking these tyreÌýsizes, otherÌýmanufacturersÌýwill have to step up to the plate with new machinesÌýthat have the capacity toÌýaccommodateÌýsuch a tyre in the future.ÌýÌý

MrÌýNerinckxÌýsaid "We recently launched a 18mÌý(60ft)Ìýheader,Ìýfor the Australian market inÌýdeveloped in conjunction with Macdon.ÌýÌý

MathieuÌýTuffery, Technical Account Manager at Michelin said:Ìý"The largerÌýdiameterÌýtyre, extends the airÌývolumeÌýso we canÌýtake greater load pressure."ÌýÌý

"This is importantÌýwith a combine's cyclicÌýfieldÌýoperationÌý(CFO),Ìýdealing withÌývariable load pointsÌýas the grain tank fills,Ìýand empties alongsideÌýchanging pressures from the header,ÌýÌý

"Granted this size of tyre already exists for the tractor market,Ìýbut not a combine, and they have very different working characteristics," he adds.ÌýÌý

"We have years ofÌýexperienceÌýin tyre developmentÌýat Michelin," says MrÌýTuffery.Ìý

"We had to prepare a prototype tyre with different casting than the final product, just to meet the time scales for such a project.Ìý

"This meant treads on the prototype had to be filed downÌýto theÌýfinal size," he adds.ÌýÌý

"Most combine tyres last theÌýlifetime of the vehicle, but weÌýdo notÌýhave that length of time to test a new product in the field," said Mr Turrey.Ìý

Mr Tuffery claims operating VF tyres at lower bar pressures can achieve 60% greater contact patch area.

UsingÌýaÌýcyclic testing processÌýto accelerate tyre wearÌýandÌýreplicateÌýforces, Michelin could extrapolate data on theÌýtyreÌýviabilityÌýat theÌýmanufacturer'sÌýtechnologyÌýcentre,ÌýLadoux, France.Ìý

But whyÌýis all this time money andÌýresourcesÌýbeingÌýput into the development of VF tyre technology and whatÌýpositivesÌýdoes it bring to the sector?ÌýÌý

UltimatelyÌýmachineryÌýhas progressedÌýupwards in size,ÌýweightÌýand potentialÌýoperating speeds, and to follow manufacturer trends tyre design has been led by market demands.ÌýÌý

Soil compaction has become a majorÌýindustry-wideÌýissueÌýwith Cranfield University claimingÌýaÌý1.2Ìýbillion Euro cost to the UK economy back in 2011.Ìý

HeadwayÌýmay have been madeÌýsince this study, with wider industry uptake ofÌýcontrolled traffic farming and no-till systems offering reduced fieldÌýcompaction.Ìý

MichelinÌýclaimsÌýtyreÌýcontact patchÌýarea can be increased by 60% justÌýby reducingÌýtyreÌýpressure on VFÌýtyres.ÌýÌý

ToÌýdemonstrateÌýthis MichelinÌýcarried outÌýa workingÌýdemonstrationÌýwith two New Holland T7's running onÌýtheÌýbrand'sÌýAxiobibÌý2ÌýVF600/70 R30 front andÌýVF710/70 R42 rear.ÌýÌý

Michelin carried out a working demonstration with two New Holland T7's running on the brand's Axiobib2 VF600/70 R30 front and VF710/70 R42 rear, to demonstrate the effects of correct tyre pressure on fuel consumption.

Set at 1.1Ìýbar pressureÌýfront and 1.0Ìýbar pressure rear, theÌýT7ÌýconsumedÌý18.8 litres/haÌýof fuelÌýwith aÌýfive-tonne draughtÌýloadÌýÌý

In comparisonÌýoperatingÌýtheÌýAxiobibÌý2 at a lowerÌý0.6 barÌýat theÌýfront and rear,Ìýthe T7ÌýconsumedÌý15.9 litres/haÌýofÌýfuelÌýwhilst a achievingÌýaÌý5.3-tonneÌýdraught load.Ìý

MrÌýTufferyÌýsaidÌý" FuelÌýsavings areÌýachievable with the right tyre pressure for the job,Ìýwith VF tyres we canÌýachieveÌýa 60% greater contact patch, reducingÌýwheel slip, and saving fuel whileÌýhelping soil preservation."Ìý

Anne-Laure Fraenkel,ÌýProject coordinator for agricultural tyres at Michelin said; "AchievingÌýtyres that canÌýoperateÌýbelow atmospheric pressure of 1.0Ìýbar isÌýaÌýreal technicalÌýchallenge.Ìý

"When a tyre isÌýoperatingÌýat 1.8ÌýbarÌýairÌýpressure within the tyre carries the load.Ìý

"But when you are operating below 1.0ÌýbarÌýthe tyre itself carries the load," she adds.Ìý

Much ofÌýMichelin'sÌýtechnical development goes intoÌýtyreÌýcarcassÌýdesign toÌýensureÌýVFÌýtyresÌýcan performÌýboth in the field and on the road at high loads.ÌýÌý

Looking to the future,ÌýMichelinÌýaimsÌýto continueÌýinnovatingÌýwith tyre design in the sector.ÌýÌý

Mrs FraenkelÌýsaid,Ìý"TheÌýindustry has to meet the challenges ofÌýestimatedÌýpopulation growth ofÌý24%, with 69% greater food demandÌýwithÌý5%ÌýgreaterÌýland mass."Ìý

Mrs Fraenkel said; "Improving tractive tyre efficiency with the correct tyre pressures, reduces engine load, and fuel usage."

"We are on our way to making tyres of the futureÌýto help meet these demands withÌýeco-friendlyÌýdesigns and full life cycleÌýassessments, toÌýevaluateÌýthe environmental impact of the tyre."Ìý

"SoÌýfarÌýwe have found the biggest impact onÌýtheÌýusage cycle is working energy efficiency.Ìý

"Improving tractive tyre efficiencyÌýwith the correct tyre pressures,Ìýreduces engine load, and fuelÌýusage," she adds.ÌýÌý
