Young Farmer Focus: Jack Ancell - 'I was farming at every opportunity'

Not being from farming family, I have been blessed with a route to enter the agricultural industry with a once in a lifetime opportunity. From a very young age, I saw my neighbour out in the fields and couldn't help but think this was something I wanted to give a go.

After sending a letter to Ian Norbury (Mobberley Angus) at the age of 10, I spent an afternoon putting up electric fences but before I knew it Mobberley Angus became a second home, farming at every opportunity available for the past 13 years.Ìý

Throughout my early years, I was fortunate to be included in farm management meetings to understand the behind the scenes of running a farming business and have been included in most decision making on the farm.

The Mobberley Angus farming system is an extensively grazed, pedigree suckler herd which created an opportunity for me to purchase my own round belt baler to support our outwintering system using unwrapped hay. This contracting service is also provided to local farms with likeminded ambitions to reduce farm plastic and costs.Ìý

In more recent years I have studied Agri-Business at Harper Adams University, building an array of great connections and I would recommend it to anyone else. One of the positive outcomes from university was a placement year at Harvey Hughes Consultants in Cheshire, working as a farm business consultant which I have continued to do after finishing my university degree.

The position has allowed me to meet a lot of great people in the local area and educated me on a vast array of challenges that the farming industry faces.Ìý

At this current point in time, I am excited to take on a new challenge, starting my own suckler beef farm on a local estate. I am very fortunate to have been given an opportunity to pursue my dreams that I have always had from a young age.

Both the estate and I are aligned to providing positive environmental outcomes alongside the rearing of grass-fed beef for future years to come.Ìý

Looking into the future, I am passionate about demonstrating that you don't have to be from a farming background to make a step into the industry. Opportunities are endless in the agricultural industry, and I hope that I can provide the support to other young farmers and new entrants which I have been blessed to have throughout my career in farming.Ìý
